Benefits of drumming and drum circles.
Drumming, even a simple pattern, offers benefits to a huge range of people. Research indicates that drumming accelerates physical healing. In addition, specific studies conducted by professionals in the fields of music therapy and mental health show us that drumming:
1) Releases endorphins in the human brain that cause feelings of happiness and euphoria.
2) Reduces tension, anxiety, and stress.
3) Helps us to connect with self and others.
4) Helps control chronic pain.
5) Boosts the immune system.
Drumming also Induces deep relaxation, lowers blood pressure, produces feelings of well-being, a release of emotional trauma.
It also can increase intelligence because the physical transmission of rhythmic energy to the brain synchronizes both hemispheres of the brain. It's also good physical exercise.
Drumming is sometimes considered a form of non-verbal communication. It can work as a form of meditation. In Buddhism, they speak of the "monkey mind", where our minds have constant random thoughts, and meditation works to control this, to clear the mind for more focused thought. For many, when listening to the rhythms of the others and responding through drumming, this clutter of random thought is diminished.
I intend to have a lightly facilitated improvisational circle with a simple mental focus.
